One Town Vijayawada is the old historic centre of Vijayawada city in Andhra Pradesh, India. It is characterised by small buildings tightly lined up together often having common walls or with very little space in between. Screened Spaces is located on a corner plot within the market area of Tarapet, One Town.
Screened Spaces is a mixed-use facility housing a company headquarters and experience center for an electrical switches company. It has a custom designed and fabricated double skin facade made of expanded, red-powder coated aluminium meshes. The volume of the building is lightened using open balconies and courtyards planned throughout the structure. The red mesh skin is specifically designed to break down the scale of the large structure within this dense urban fabric.
The streets are narrow and busy and see very heavy foot traffic. The challenge here was to create a structure that would stand out within this otherwise visually stimulating setting. The design would need to have a unique voice within such a context while also addressing light and ventilation issues for the inhabitants.
As the site was oriented with the majority of the workspaces receiving unwanted heat from the harsh south sunlight, the custom designed double skin facade was used as a tool to shield the internal spaces strategically.

A special joinery was detailed out for mounting the second skin of mesh frames on the mullions of the structural glazing. This unique joinery allowed for the meshes to be mounted at will as and where required within the facade.
