The glazed surfaces of the facade are further detailed with a double skin consisting of outer mesh in fluted profile which is also fixed to satisfactorily address any safety concern.
The entire design of the structure evolved out of an exercise of trying to create lightness and openings in the built volume while modulating the resulting light conditions to serve specific functional requirements in different areas of the building.
The studio aimed to establish a distinctive visual identity by designing a versatile, sculptural form for both interior and exterior use. After rigorous trials, they settled on a fluted shape that was three-dimensional yet non-orthogonal, suitable for mass production via casting. This form enhanced the building's aesthetic with dynamic light interactions throughout the day and under artificial lighting at night, solidifying the brand's presence.
In order to create a unique visual identity, the studio started with a formal exercise of designing a simple repeatable form that could be used throughout the project both inside and out. It was important that this form would truly be 3 dimensional as an ode to the sculptural nature of jewellery making.

Fluted Block
+ Mixed use
+ 7000 sq.ft.
+ Andhra Pradesh, India
Fluted Block is a boutique jewellery showroom in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh's new commercial district clad entirely in custom-designed concrete flutes. Being a mixed-use space, it posed significant planning challenges including managing foot traffic, separating functions, and ensuring security while maintaining visual openness and adequate lighting for product display.
The design tackled the challenge of varying natural lighting levels by implementing several key strategies. A large skylit stairwell running along the southwest side ensured ample light at higher levels, diminishing gradually downwards. A central skylight in the top slab also maximizes natural light distribution. A west-facing double-height atrium offered a grand, naturally lit entrance, benefiting from evening sunlight. Vertical glazing on the north side of the upper floors provided consistent cool sunlight throughout the day. The facade featured glazed surfaces with a double skin of outer fluted profile mesh, enhancing safety measures and aesthetic detailing.
