UFO_01

UFO_01 was a material experimentation and research project aimed to push the limits of crafting in stone, using a combination of various practices from the new age digital design tool aided CNC machining to the traditional practices of carving and grinding stone by hand.

The deliberate brief set out for such a project was that of creating a monolithic, mono-material pavilion in stone. The process began with a digital prototype to define the form followed by that of making an actual 1:1 scale part of the pavilion sculpture to study in depth the fabrication constraints of milling capacities and challenges involved with logistics/weight of stone, labour involved etc.

The design of the pavilion comprised of 2 numbers, L-Shaped Blocks, each of 6’x3.5’ created by milling out a 15 Tonne solid block of French Limestone. The overall form of the stone surface was fluidic and intended to challenge the inherent static perception one has of stone. The idea was in essence - to simply 'liquefy' solid stone.

This was achieved through a rigorous process wherein the digital CAD processes had to accommodate the analogue limitations and possibilities that became evident through making actual true scale mock-ups. Thus, the process of design was informed and then seamlessly integrated with that of making to arrive at the final form.
